Bionic Commando Review: Bionically Fantastic

Bionic Commando originally released for the arcades in 1987 and later ported for NES and others systems, Bionic is a game that focuses on a bionically enhanced soldier. Those were 2D action platform games, and this review is about Capcom's new Bionic Commando in 3D for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

http://blogs.columbiatribune.com/gameover/bionicC.jpg

It's a little tricky to get used to robotic arm at first. And before you've barely gotten the hang of it, before you can fully come to terms with the awesome power of the multi-purpose grappling hook, you are thrust full-bloodedly into the action, enemies and all. In the midst of all that carnage and post-nuclear apocalyptic radioactivity, you must adapt yourself to, what can only be described as the thing that has been missing from the base of your shoulder all this time. We wouldn't shun the idea of being trapped in this game playing it over and over just waiting for them to release a sequel. That being said let's get to the game.

It starts off with our bionic commando, minus his one very bionic arm, being saved from a wrongful execution, right at the very death. You see, he is the only man.. er.. bionic soldier still alive, who has any chance of stopping a coalition that has detonated a nuclear device, destroying everything in Ascension City. One man and his trusty mechanical arm, in seperate drop pods, are fired towards one end of the city, from jets grinning wider than the Cheshire Cat. A mid-game tutorial begins just as our ex-soldier finds the pod carrying his bionic arm, and incidentially is as exciting as the start of the game. It takes a while to figure out what exactly it is you to do in the tutorial, and a little more time and effort to actually do it. But when you finally do what is expected of you, it's just so thrilling. Frankly it captivates you and makes you feel like doing the moves over and over just to watch the game physics do its thing.

At the start of the game, you have only a limited amount of moves that you can perform with the arm. But as you go along, more fascinating, dumb-founding moves are granted, which ultimately lets you sling at opponents, anything from rocks to trash cans, from barrels and wooden boxes to police cars. You can even stun enemies by throwing and smashing their dead comrades into them, or live ones. Smashing one soldier, preferable alive, into others, is just so satisfying. And when running and jumping gets boring, you can always zip around using the many functionality of the arm. Heck, that's what it's there for!

http://gamerinvestments.com/video-game-stocks/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/bionic-commando-bc_win32_release_2009-04-24_15-30-12-16.jpg

The environments in the game are huge and seem near endless, stetching as far as the eye can see. But you are limited to moving about within areas bounded by radioactivity, which is depicted as a hazy zone of brilliant blue. This tends to get really frustrating. Stray into a radioactive area for even so much as a few seconds, and that will the end of little old bionic you. But in the areas where you can tread, the game lets you run and swing through, and change (to some extent) vast open forest environments, rocky underground locations, all beautifully built. And the graphics on the surface are just so rich with the greens and browns popping out from the bluish radiation background.

As for the gammeplay, it is interesting in the beginning when you are still learning the ropes of the oversized mechanical arm. But after a while, it does get old. And Spencer's ultra cheesy one-liners like "Nailed Yeah!" and "That must have hurt!" don't make it any less monotonous. Although his "So long son!" was just too funny. The one thing that never gets old is the ability to kite huge objects such as Biomechs and cars, into the air and smash them into virtually anything, and Nathan's "Death from Above" move is as aptivating as it is deadly; for the enemies that is! Also, it was just jaw-dropping to what the guy free dive. And when he does it in the sunshine, it's even more fullfilling. There are also a number of mini challenges, such as swinging for 30 meters without touching anything, which give upgrades to weapons and armor.

http://cache.g4tv.com/ImageDb3/145006_S/Bionic-Commando.jpg

Playing on the hard Difficulty setting the game's AI didn't seem fooled by the same trick twice. And while the grunt soldiers were not challenging enough, the Biomechs, especially the aerial Biomechs with energy blast powers, do give something to think about, strategy-wise. You might even have an uncontrollable urge to scream out some of Spencer's lines when youu ultimately kill those damn things. The Music is a little like Spencer's lines in the game. And although the music score is really great, the overly dramatic suspense music that comes in every now and then is less than convincing. Most of the time, you are just running and swinging to no music at all. Probably a good time to complete some of those mini challenges.

Strangely everyone in Ascension City has succumbed to the nuclear explosion, not one survivor, not even a single body is left. But you do see a few silhouettes of birds fluttering away from you a few times. Oh, and there are a bunch of collectible items, looking like microchips, scattered over the place, which apparently unlock game art. But to find all, you have really got to search the highs and lows of the environments.

Towards the end, the game's story gets stronger and gives more reason to keep playing. Plus the boss fights were quite exhilarating. More than enouh to get the adrenaline levels up. What would have really been hilarious though was if the Bionic Commando would strike up a few martial arts poses every now and then.

There's no hiding the fact that this "3rd Person Grapple" did deliver an awesome experience like no other. From 2D to 3D, beautifully, brilliantly, bionically! Definitely one to pick up this summer.

Final Word: Graphically, Bionic Commando delivers an awesome experience. And although the plot is a little slow leading up to the end, the action is unmatched. All things considered, it is a really great game to play.

Graphics: 9/10.
Gameplay: 7/10.
Game AI: 9/10.
Game Music: 7/10.
Overall (not Average): 8.5/10.

PS3 Price Cut Effective as of August?

At E3 there, were many new announcements including one "it's" been a long time comin' announcement, we all saw from miles away, which is of course the Sony PSP Go. But there wasn't a single mention of Console hardware price cuts from any of the companies. Well, now there are rumors about just that.

http://www.myps3.com.au/img/news/News_1508-904.jpg

IndustryGamers reports that according to Arvind Bhatia, an analyst with the investment firm Sterne Agee, Sony Plans a 100 USD (prox. Rs. 4,745) Price Cut for the PS3 in mid-August. This is incidentally just before the launch of Madden (08/18).

"industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden (08/18) and the start of the back to school shopping season. This will naturally be a positive for the industry, "Arvind Bahatia says, adding: "The industry is alive and well. While Software sales for the first half of 2009 are expected to be down mid-single-digits, we believe the second half, in contrast, will likely be up 10% to 15% driven by a robust lineup, easier comparisons and potential price cut(s)."

This is, of course, just rumor at this point. But if Sony does slash the price of its PS3, it would be interesting to see what sort of response Microsoft and Nintendo would have with respect to their own console. Also, no word on whether Sony plans to reduce the price of their PSP-3000, now that the PSP Go is coming.

So gamers, if you planning to buy the PS3... I think it worth the wait and see if the price of PS3 will cut down. =)

Killzone 2 Preview PS3

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/906/906862/killzone-2-20080901052344204.jpg
One Upon at a time in a galaxy far, far away, Sony and Guerilla Games came up with the idea of Killzone, a shooter that was set in the future yet felt like a war that had engulfed masses and nearly wiped out 60 million people. Its sequel aimed at achieving a level of development that was unparalleled technically by any next generation console this date.

Killzone 2 places players in midst of a conflict that rages on the Helghan planet against the ISA. The ultimate result is a complete chaos that aims to visually satisfy any PS3 owner till date. The preview code that was played upon at Milestone's offices in New Delhi clearly showed that importance of this title for Sony and the gaming community as a whole.

The built starts off with the player landing on Corinth River and engaging the Helghan in violent combat. Sev is then required to pick up an RPG and blow up a nearby settlement of enemy forces camped on a bridge. This segment upon, all the action went in such a smooth transition that it was almost impossible to overlook the fact this was actually a video game being played and not some Computer generated visuals from E3 2005.

The action kicks into overdrive towards the end of the entire arena, where he is required to blow up a tank and wipe out an entire legion of foot-soldiers. The next area was right out of E3 2005, only with an added bunch of colors. This perhaps the first areas when the player actually gets to see most of the heavier version of the Helghan forces. The Mini-boss battle requires the player to hit the enemy at his gas chamber continuously till he explodes into a rage of flames.

http://www.gamingindians.com/wp-content/gallery/killzone-2/killzone-2-008.jpg

The Visari Square preps up the player with the utilization of a sniper rifle that requires the player to keep the Sixaxis steady whilst, pump his foes with lead. This bit actually required a lot of tacit and dexterity from the player since the aiming module needs to be perfectly tuned. So if the player is taking hits or is under fire, his desired target would have either escaped or would have been taken down by one his own squad mates.

Most of the fights in Killzone 2 require the player in holding or defending a position. the only problem with the game is its variety of spice that does fizz out after a number of battles. But since the environment keeps on changing, each combat experience does feel fresh and unique. There are a couple of things about Killzone 2 which might irk the player, this bit is subject to question since this was a preview build and may have already been revamped as we speak.

The 1st bit is that Sev has the ability to revive his squad mates, but his squad mates somehow cannot revive him. Once a player is dead, his lesson in history begins from his previous checkpoint. The 2nd bit was the ability to carry only one gun into combat.

Sev's primary weapon of choice is a magnum which has unlimited ammunition and most of the times he is heavily dependent on the Helghan assault rifle which is not as fun to use as his ISA counterpart. Grenades have a timer lag attached to them, so the player can strategically cook a grenade and fling it onto his foe for maximum destruction.

Visually, it still remains stunning as ever. There are a few timed instances in the game that would actually make the player foam in his mouth with frenzy. The Preview build of Killzone 2 did have a few load issues between checkpoints but these were minor Enough, not to spoil the overall experience of the game.

http://kingslayer.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/killzone-2_23-06-08_01.jpg

Overall the game seems to be a must have shooter for the dawn of 2009, even if you own a Xbox 360, Killzone 2 is still worth a dekko for it seriously fine tunes all the Experience of Classic Shooters and builds on a fantastically looking game that is sure to knockout a billion jaws before settling down.

Ninja Gaiden 3? Possibly for Xbox360 & PS3?

Ninja Gaiden is Tomonobu Itagaki's action adventure game developed by Team Ninja was released for the Xbox in 2004, and followed up with Ninja Gaiden II for the Xbox 360 in 2008. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is a refined version of Ninja Gaiden II, which is expected to be released exclusively for the PS3. Now, word is spreading that the 3rd Ninja Gaiden is in the making, and a dual platform release seems to have a strong possibility.

http://guide2games.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/ninja-gaiden.jpg

With the departure of Tomonobu Itagaki, Team Ninja has a new leader in Yosuke Hayashi. In an interview with Kikizo, Hayashi said that Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 will only be for the PS3 and the new content introduced in Sigma 2 will not made available for Xbox 360 owners.

When asked about the truth behind comments from Itagaki, regarding the series being put to sleep with Ninja Gaiden II, Hayashi said, "Regardless of what Itagaki-san said before, in time, what the consumers, the gamers are looking for is going to be the next chapter, the future of an outstanding series. We feel that we are in a position of being able to make that call, and to provide pure entertainment that's going to be enjoyed by action gamers and our fans. That calling is already there, we feel it, and therefor we will continue to work towards a future for the series."

Hayashi had direct Ninja Gaiden Sigma for the PS3 and directed and produced Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword for the Nintendo DSi. He also said that they would be in a better position delivering content for both console audiences and something about pushing themselves to the next level in the Interview.

Kamiya's Bayonetta - Itagaki's view

One thing that old rivals Tomonobu Itagaki & Hideki Kamiya have in Common is that they both parted ways with their long time employers and started anew. But apparently the feud isn't over, atleast not for Itagaki, who is known for serious and strong comments on other Developers and Video Games.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/972/972535/bayonetta-screens-20090414035509893_640w.jpg

In an interview with 1UP, Itagaki spoke rather abrasively about Kamiya's Bayonetta saying, "If I made a similar game for a game I made in the Company I quit, people would say, "What an idiot, can't he make anything else?" well, that is more or less the opinion I have for, uh, that Bayo-something game."

When asked what he thinks of the lead character in Bayonetta being covered in hair, Itagaki says, "Covered in hair, is she? I dunno, Mr. Kamiya must have a lot going through his head. Well, in any case, I would first recommend laser eye surgery. I'm sure he's not that strapped for cash, right?"

Itagaki was accompanied by Team Ninja art director, Hiroaki Matsui, and in the interview they spoke about other developments as well, such as planning not to use Aerosmith music anymore and the unofficial name of the new team, Tokyo Vikings, which Itagaki apparently came up with other Drinks.
